Ted Cruz, Rising Republican Hispanic Star, is Running for Senate (ContributorNetwork)

Ted Cruz, a former Texas Solicitor General and candidate for Senator, addressed the Values Voters Summit to a warm reception. Cruz is considered the more conservative of the candidates to replace Kay Bailey Hutchison.

* Cruz raised $1 million in the past three months for his run, $2.8 million in total. He has $2.4 million in the bank.

* Like Marco Rubio, the junior senator from Florida, Cruz is the son of Cuban immigrants. He grew up in Houston and is a graduate of Princeton and the Harvard Law School. He was a primary editor of the Harvard Law Review, an executive editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, and a founder of the Harvard Latino Law Review.

* Cruz clerked for then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court William Rehnquist and J. Michael Littig of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. He was Director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission, an Associate Deputy Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, and a Domestic Policy Adviser for the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign. Cruz was Texas Solicitor General from 2003 to 2008. He is currently a partner at the firm of Morgan, Lewis, and Bockus.

* Cruz announced his candidacy for senate on Jan. 19, soon after Hutchison announced she did not intend to run for another term.

* Cruz touts himself as a defender of the free market by using the 10th Amendment to the Constitution to combat excessive government regulations.

* Cruz filed an amicus brief in the District of Columbia v. Heller that caused the Supreme Court to strike down a ban of private possession of firearms in the district.

* Cruz wrote an amicus brief on behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in the Hornbeck Offshore Services v. Salazar opposing the Obama administration moratorium on offshore exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals later struck down that moratorium.

* He filed an amicus brief for a Supreme Court case Lopez v. Gonzales urging strict enforcement of anti illegal immigration laws that punished illegal aliens who crossed the border with prior felony convictions.

* Cruz takes the conservative view on public policy issues. He is in favor of a smaller government, is strong on defense, supports the Second Amendment, opposes illegal immigration, supports the production of domestic energy, and opposes same sex marriage.

* Cruz's main rival for the Republican nomination is Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.
