Wall Street opens lower without "cliff" solution

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks opened lower on Monday, the last trading day of the year, as political leaders in Washington worked to find agreement that would keep the United States from falling off the "fiscal cliff."

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 51.99 points, or 0.40 percent, at 12,886.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 4.09 points, or 0.29 percent, at 1,398.34. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 5.20 points, or 0.18 percent, at 2,955.11.

Major indexes are on track for their sixth straight day of losses, though the S&P 500 remains up more than 11 percent for the year.

College basketball scores: Central Florida rolls over Howard, 62-45

The Knights were able to dominate at home, earning their eighth victory of the season.

The Central Florida Knights took care of business on Friday night against the Howard Bison, winning 62-45 at UCF Arena.

Central Florida (8-3) was led by Tristan Spurlock who scored a game-high 15 points and also pulled down four rebounds. Keith Clanton also had a big night, pouring in eight points while nabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out five assists.

Most impressive thought was the Knights defense, which didn't allow any Howard player t reach double figures in the contest. Howard barely shot 38 percent from the field, including 4-of-14 from behind the 3-point line.

The no.5 Indiana Hoosiers beat the Jacksonville Dolphins 93-59. It appeared to be a massive mismatch on paper, and it played out that way inside Assembly Hall. Indiana rolled behind Jordan Hulls, who led all scorers with 20 points. Cody Zeller also had a solid game with 16 points and six rebounds.

Glenn Powell was a bright spot for Jacksonville, pulled down 12 rebounds and scoring six points.

U.S. plane stuck in Iran for repairs after emergency landing

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI is still searching for one of two convicted bank robbers who escaped last week from a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago by lowering themselves on a makeshift rope nearly 20 stories to the street. Kenneth Conley, 38, and his cellmate, Joseph Jose Banks, 37, escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center early on the morning of December 18. The pair apparently broke a window in the cell they shared, squeezed through the opening and lowered themselves to the street. They then hailed a cab to make their getaway. ...

Google+ Business Pages Can Now Comment On ... - Marketing Land

Business pages on Google+ a just?received?a big upgrade to their reach. Now pages can interact with those who haven?t circled them on Google+. Previously a user must have added a page to its circles in order for the page to interact ? not anymore.

TheNextWeb?reported on this initial update and it was confirmed shortly after as well. Google gave this official statement to TheNextWeb:

?We?re always experimenting with new ways to make the social experience more organic. As such, Pages are now able to comment freely on posts of interest to them. We think this provides a better sharing experience for pages and profiles alike. For example, if someone praises their favorite bakery on Google+, that baker could now say thank you to that customer, right in the stream. Or if someone posts about a customer service issue, that business could reply directly, providing a better user experience.?

While this could be a valuable tool for businesses, it also could open the floodgates for page spam. With the ability to reach out to anyone and comment on a public post, this very well may be a?deleterious?move on Google?s behalf.

(AP) ? Margus Hunt knew he had eight hours to fill on the flight over the Pacific Ocean, so he asked the SMU staff to put together film of Fresno State for him to study. He hit the Bulldogs like a tidal wave Monday night in the Hawaii Bowl.

The 6-foot-8 defensive end raced around right tackle to blindside Derek Carr and force a fumble. Hunt smashed into running back Robbie Rouse on a delayed handoff and forced another fumble. On a three-man rush, he sacked Carr in the end zone for a safety.

It was an inspiring performance by the senior from Estonia, and it set the tone for the Mustangs' 43-10 win.

"That was a lot of fun," Hunt said. "We knew from the get-go it was going to be a Monday night football game, the only game in the nation. We wanted to show our skills and make some plays. To me personally ... this is where it all started. It's good to end on this note."

The Mustangs (7-6) also returned two interceptions for touchdowns, giving them eight for the season to tie the NCAA record set last year by Southern Miss. Hayden Greenbauer picked off Carr and returned it 83 yards with 1:14 left, the final blow to a miserable night for the Bulldogs (9-4).

SMU had seven sacks, more than double the most Fresno State had given up in a game all year.

Garrett Gilbert was effective with his arm and his legs, running for a 17-yard touchdown for the first score of the game and throwing a perfect strike to Darius Johnson for a 21-yard score to answer the Bulldogs' only touchdown. He rushed for 98 yards on 18 carries and threw for 212 yards.

But this game was decided by the Mustangs' defense, with Hunt leading the way. He was voted the game's MVP.

"We tried some slide protections to 92 (Hunt). You know, they beat us," Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. "We tried going empty to spread things out and get it out quick, we tried to max protect. Everything we tried didn't work."

Fresno State, the Mountain West Conference champion, has lost its last four bowl games.

SMU, which went 25 years without a bowl after its NCAA death penalty, now has played in a school-record four straight bowls, winning the last three. Hunt was a mystery when that run started in 2009, a gold medalist in the shot put and discus in Beijing at the 2006 Junior World Championships who came to SMU for track and field and turned to football when it was his only hope of scholarship money.

SMU coach June Jones has a knack for taking a chance on athletes from other sports, and he liked what he saw, from the 82-inch wing span to the 4.7 speed in the 40.

"It's not hard for me to see a world-class athlete who can run like that, has strength like that, has an arm length like that," Jones said. "The first scrimmage we had ... the only thing I didn't know was if he was going to be tough enough. The first play we ran a trap and hit him real hard, and he wanted to fight. I said, 'OK, we may have a player here.'

"His best football is ahead of him," Jones said. "I was really excited, on a national stage, for him to have that kind of a game."

The Bulldogs turned in a dud.

Fresno State, which had averaged just over 47 points in its last five games, was shut out in the first half for the first time in two years. Carr was too busy running for his life to get the Bulldogs into any kind of offensive rhythm. And when the Bulldogs finally scored with 10:21 left in the third quarter, Gilbert led the Mustangs on a 75-yard drive that he finished with a pinpoint pass to Johnson in the corner for a touchdown.

"That drive there put the game away in essence," Gilbert said. "For us to respond like that and put six points on that board was big."

It allowed Jones to walk out of Aloha Stadium with yet another win.

He was the coach at Hawaii for eight years, leaving after its unbeaten regular season in 2007. Jones now has won 10 straight games in Aloha Stadium, dating to a December 2006 loss to Oregon State.

"I just want to say 'Aloha' to the seniors," Jones said during the trophy presentation. "We said we were going to do it and we did it."

Without hardly breaking a sweat.

The 10 points matched the fewest Fresno State has scored this year, dating to its 20-10 loss to Boise State. Carr was 33-of-54 passing for 362 yards, but most of that came late in the game when the Bulldogs were trying to catch up.

He was overwhelmed by the Mustangs' defensive front, particularly Hunt, who had two sacks, two forced fumbles and three tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

"When you go three-and-out, it feels like there's no rhythm at all," Carr said.

After a dull, scoreless opening quarter, Gilbert shook off one tackle and scored on a 17-yard run. The defense took over from there.

Hunt blew past right tackle Alex Fifita and blindsided Carr, dropping him flat as the ball came loose and was scooped up by Aaron Davis, who returned it 23 yards to the Fresno State 16 until he fumbled it out of bounds. SMU had to settle for a field goal. On the next series, Carr scrambled backward and couldn't escape an 18-yard sack to the 6, and then Hunt sacked him in the end zone for a safety.

Hunt wasn't finished. On second-and-7 from the 33, Carr gave it to Robbie Rouse on a delayed handoff, right about the time Hunt showed up to disrupt the play and cause another fumble that Taylor Reed recovered. That drive went backward, and Chase Hover connected from 48 yards.

Jones' only concern was having to settle for field goals, fearing that might come back to haunt the Mustangs given Fresno State's explosive offensive. Not to worry. The SMU defense dominated to the very last score.

Mentors Help Small-Business Owners Develop Leadership Skills ...

December 24th, 2012

?

Paul Choman

Paul Choman, Regional Manager, WESST Enterprise Center in Farmington

Deciding what direction to take a business is isolating for the owner of a small business ? especially a sole proprietor. Relatives and friends can offer advice and opinions, but they often lack the expertise to provide the informed, objective counsel the entrepreneur needs.

That?s when a mentor is handy. A mentor is both coach and sage ? someone who?s versed in the challenges of running a company and ready to share knowledge with others who need help with business strategies, resources and goals. The best mentors empathize with the people they?re helping and aim to empower them to anticipate and overcome obstacles.

The junior partner in this arrangement isn?t a passive disciple, and the mentor?s word isn?t gospel. But it?s the mentee?s responsibility to make the first move, direct the relationship and stay fully engaged in his professional development.

Identify scope and need: Some entrepreneurs need specific input for a limited time ? maybe a discreet review of a business plan before it?s taken to investors. Some want a long-term relationship with an industry insider who can guide them through high-tech product development. Women and minorities might want an adviser familiar with the race and gender barriers they encounter in the business world. No matter what the case, a business owner who knows what she wants from a mentor is more likely to find it.

Compatibility matters: Before beginning the search, the aspiring mentee should honestly evaluate his personal management style and openness to direction and constructive feedback. Without a willingness to trust the perspective of another person ? sometimes a complete stranger ? the entrepreneur might be unwilling to take risks based on the mentor?s advice. After considering his own personality, the mentee can identify the qualities that matter most in a mentor.

Look around: The entrepreneur can search many places for a mentor. WESST ? a New Mexico-based nonprofit small-business development and training network ?is a great place to start, as WESST provides staff members to work face-to-face with clients. Industry and trade groups are also good places to meet people who might be willing to be mentors, and online communities link business people with experts all over the world.

Ground rules: The business owner should spend whatever time it takes to find the person who most matches her needs in terms of expertise, availability and personal chemistry. Both parties then should formalize the bond by discussing and agreeing on expectations, goals and boundaries. Mentorand mentee should decide how often to meet and under what circumstances the mentee can ask for help between meetings.

Mentoring in practice: If the relationship evolves into a fruitful one, the business owner should become increasingly confident about his developing skill and knowledge set and empowered by tangible growth in his leadership abilities. When the relationship reaches a natural end ? when goals are met or in sight ? both parties should discuss whether to make a clean break or maintain an informal collaboration.

WESST provides training, loans and support services to New Mexico small businesses from six statewide non-profit offices. To learn more, visit wesst.org.

'Flipping the bird' Christmas lights display back up in La. town ...

Posted on: 3:06 pm, December 21, 2012, by Nick Dutton, updated on: 03:08pm, December 21, 2012

DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (WAFB) ? Folks in a sleepy Louisiana town are angry about one homeowner?s unconventional holiday lights display.

Police originally told Sarah Childs to take down her outdoor Christmas lights display in the shape of two hands extending the middle finger.

This after cops received complaints from neighbors about the display on Starlite Drive in Denham Springs.

In fact, one neighbor told WAFB that she could not believe someone would install such a display using Christmas lights.

However, Childs was awarded a temporary restraining order against the city ? and reinstalled the lights.

?We will show up if there?s a serious need, emergency, fire or requiring police protection or whatever ? but not to oppose this judge?s orders no way shape or form,? Denham Springs Mayor Jimmy Durbin said.

Childs filed suit against Denham Springs with help from the American Civil Liberties Union.

According to executive director Marjorie Esman, what some call offensive is Childs? guaranteed right to Freedom of Expression.

?If people find it distasteful or they don?t like it, well, that?s life,? Esman said. ?We all are exposed to things we don?t like, and people have different opinions. That?s what makes for a free society.?

The temporary restraining order gives Childs the right to use these lights to express herself at least until that January hearing.

However, neighbors said they have no problem with Childs? free speech?claim,?but worry about the display?s affect on little ones.

?Kids are going to look at those lights and wonder? ?what does that mean,? Todd Traylor, one of Childs? neighbors, said. ?How do you explain to a 4-year-old kid or a 2-year-old kid that doesn?t know what that means yet, and you try to shield them from stuff like that.??

Gunman kills woman at Pa. church, 2 men elsewhere

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (AP) ? A man fatally shot a woman decorating for a children's Christmas party at a tiny church hall and killed two men elsewhere in a rural township on Friday before he was shot dead in a gunfight with state troopers.

Three troopers in patrol cars were injured in a pursuit that began after the gunman, driving a pick-up truck, fired at them, police said. One trooper injured a wrist and then was hit in the chest but was saved by a bulletproof vest.

The gunman was killed during a final exchange of gunfire after ramming his truck head-on into another police cruiser, authorities said.

The shootings began in Frankstown Township, in central Pennsylvania, at about 9 a.m., and investigators were processing five crime scenes within about a 1.5-mile radius, authorities said at a news briefing Friday afternoon. Troopers were responding to a 911 call of a shooting in the township when they heard calls reporting at least one other shooting elsewhere, state police said.

"It's going to take us some time to put this all together ... and know exactly what occurred," said Lt. Col. George Bivens, deputy state police commissioner.

Authorities did not release the names of the victims or the shooter, though they did say the man lived in Blair County.

State police said they were still trying to piece together a timeline and motive. The gunman and the victims weren't related, though the victims may have been, at least distantly, Blair County District Attorney Rich Consiglio said.

Besides the woman, Bivens said, one man was shot at a residence, and the other man was shot at a crash site where the gunman "used his truck and also struck that vehicle much in the same manner that he did to our state police officer."

But family members of the victims said they were told the woman at the church was the first victim shot, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported. The gunman then shot two men in the driveway of a home after a confrontation at a stop sign, one of the men's cousins, Marie Brenneman, told the newspaper.

"This person went to their driveway with a pistol, pointed at them and started shooting," Brenneman said.

She said both men were the shooter's neighbors in the tiny village of Geeseytown, about 70 miles west of Harrisburg, the state capital.

"They were uneasy around him," she said.

The woman at Juniata Valley Gospel Church had cooked food the day before for the funeral of the church's longtime pastor, said the Rev. James McCaulley, his brother. The church was still reeling from the Rev. David McCaulley's death when the woman returned to decorate its hall ? named after the pastor of 58 years ? and bullets ripped through a window, he said.

The gunman then entered and shot one of two women before he left, the reverend said.

Police identified the five crime scenes as the church; a home and ground around the home; a crash site where another victim was killed; the point in the road where the gunman opened fire on the troopers; and where the final encounter occurred after the truck collided with the police cruiser.

Bivens said investigators don't know if the victims were picked at random.

Besides the trooper wounded twice, a second trooper was injured by glass fragments in his eye and bullet fragments that hit him in the forehead, Bivens said. The third trooper suffered minor injuries from the head-on crash, he said.

"I think we have three very fortunate state police members tonight," Bivens said. "We are very thankful for the fact that they survived this attack. Someone was watching over them."

McCaulley, who is the pastor of another church about 50 miles away from the site of Friday's carnage, said his older brother began leading the Frankstown church in 1954.

"He preached his last sermon at the church in October before he fell ill," McCaulley said.

The church, which lists about 150 members in an online want ad posted this month for an associate pastor, is close-knit, and the woman killed Friday was among its more active members, McCaulley said. She had made food for him to take home Thursday since his wife had died this year, he said.

"The only thing I can say good at this time is that (the gunman) didn't do this 24 hours earlier when there was a big crowd in the church hall," McCaulley said. "We're devastated."

Friday's shootings were the second involving a rural Pennsylvania church this month.

An elementary school teacher is jailed on charges he fatally shot his ex-wife, a church organist, during a service in Coudersport on Dec. 2. The pastor and church members subdued him until police arrived.

Blind juggling robot keeps a ball in the air for hours

Sara Reardon, reporter

It's only a matter of time before robots start running away to join the circus. This "blind" robot - it has no visual sensors - can juggle a ball flawlessly and never gets tired. Designed by Philipp Reist and Raffaello D'Andrea of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Z?rich, the juggler uses only mechanical sensors on its paddle to detect the ball's trajectory.

To prevent the ball from flying off in any direction, the paddle is slightly curved. Each time the ball hits it, the robot calculates nine different aspects of the ball's bounce, such as its speed, angle, and spin. The paddle then either speeds up or slows down as it moves to meet the ball, thus keeping it bouncing in a stable arc.

The researchers tried out several different balls such as industrial ball bearings and tennis balls. Nylon balls worked the best, with the robot juggling them as high as 2 metres into the air.

But circus performers and buskers might not need to worry about their jobs after all. The researchers also discovered that the robot is very bad at juggling shoes and Coke bottles - both simple tasks for a human. Well, one who can juggle, anyway.

Car Dealers - Buying Your Next Car - Classic Car Information

I've always been brought up to appreciate the value of things and to make sure you can afford to buy something before you part with the cash. Apparently this means that firstly you won't end up with loads of junk you bought on a whim and secondly, by waiting and going without for months, when you do finally get your dream item, it's even better than you'd ever imagine. It's for this reason I highly recommend giving your local Ford car dealer a miss and buying yourself a new Ford Mustang from America.

Yes importing a car is going to be a headache. It's going to cost a scary amount of money in import tax and fees, but in the case of a new Ford Mustang, it'll still be incredibly cheap compared to the opposition and more than worth the hassle. I'd liken the process to my most prized possession - my Fender Jaguar guitar.

After a few years of playing I figured I was of a decent enough standard to qualify for owning a better quality guitar without feeling guilty. Following months of searching guitar shops, internet offers and studying what guitars my idols played, it was settled beyond doubt in my head that the Jaguar was for me. Despite saving and missing vital socialising nights at university, I still didn't have enough money to buy a new one from the high street, but did for over the internet. "It won't matter" I thought, "It'll be the same guitar at the end of the day". I placed my order for a white version and excitedly checked my email every day for a dispatch notice. Nothing.

Two weeks passed with no word and more importantly no money left in my bank account. Smelling fraud I was pleasantly surprised when someone answered the company's telephone number. Very apologetically I was told that the guitar wasn't available for another three weeks due to its rarity. Wanting it more than a fat person wants cake, I held out another agonising month whereupon I was met with the news they couldn't get one and I'd be refunded the money. Two months older and a broken dream was all I had to show for my efforts.

In a final throw of the dice I went to a back street shop that probably sold one guitar a year and given that rationale would be desperate for my business. Amazingly they agreed to match the internet price and would have a white Fender Jaguar in the next week. The big day arrived (again) and I went to the shop to be greeted with a large box with 'Fender' emblazoned across the front. Shaking with excitement I rushed home and much like Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, ever-so-carefully eased the lid of the box to be met with a brand new Fender Jaguar - in red.

Having waited so long and experienced so much disappointment, I was unmoved by this latest setback. There and then I decided to keep it and I grew to love it, despite its eccentric foibles like strings popping out of place when playing certain chords. If I could save one item from destruction it would be the guitar, not because it's the greatest guitar in the world, but because of its beauty and that it has a story that makes it worth so much more than money to me. Going through the rigmarole of importing a Ford Mustang will give you the same feeling I'm positive.

Importantly, rather than getting misty-eyed over an inanimate object, the Mustang (not to be confused with the Fender Mustang which is also a guitar) is a brilliant car. Yes it has problems such as engineering that was outdated in the days of Napoleon and although it develops 300bhp, it's from a massive, petrol slurping 4.6 litre engine that will get you from standing to 60mph in 5 seconds. BMW would produce 600bhp and 2.5 seconds if you let them loose with 4.6 litres.

But none of this is the point. It's precisely because the Mustang doesn't do things in a hi-tech or economic way that it feels so honest and demands input from the driver, so when you take a corner particularly nicely, it's because you did it and not some NASA designed computer in the dashboard. The styling harks back to the classic 1960s Mustangs too with flared wheel arches and more bulges than a mountain range (they're bigger too).

With current exchange rates a new Ford Mustang costs ?13,800 which with importing fees and right-hand drive conversion is more accurately ?22,000 - more than a Golf GTi which in the real world would be faster too. Yet get behind the wheel, cruise along with that V8 lump on a sunny day and it doesn't matter that the dashboard is made from the cheapest materials, the suspension is non-existent and the engine is thousands of years out of date. The fact you spent the time to save up for the car, wait for it to arrive and have exclusivity means that you'll love it forever - even if it's coloured pink.

Epson WorkForce WF-2540

The Epson WorkForce WF-2540 multi-function printer (MFP) is almost identical in most ways to the Epson WorkForce WF-2530 that I recently reviewed. Both models are best understood as personal MFPs for any size office and both offer essentially the same size, speed, and output quality. However the WF-2540 adds a few key features, most notably an Ethernet connector as an alternative to the Wi-Fi that both printers offer. For those who prefer the extra security and reliability of wired network connectivity, that alone makes it well worth the small additional cost.

In addition to the Ethernet connector, the WF-2540 adds a larger, more readable LCD, at 2.5 inches, for the control panel menus and a USB A connector on the front of the printer to let you scan directly to, but not print from, USB memory keys. Beyond that, however, there are few, if any, differences between the two models.

As with the Epson WF-2530, the WF-2540's footprint is only 15.4 by 14.8 inches not including the front output tray, making it small enough to fit comfortably on your desk. More important, it shares the Epson WF-2530's focus on office-related, rather than home-oriented, features. That's not to say that it can't serve in the dual role of home and home-office printer. However, you won't find features like support for printing directly from PictBridge cameras, which you might expect in a home printer.

The Basics
Core MFP features in the WF-2540 include the ability to print and fax from a PC, scan to a PC, and work as a standalone copier and fax machine. Office-oriented features include a 30-page automatic document feeder, which supplements a letter-size flatbed to let you scan multipage documents and legal-size paper easily,

For printing, the WF-2540 offers only a 100-sheet paper capacity and no duplexer (for automatic printing on both sides of the page). This limited paper handling is the main reason the printer is best reserved for one person's use, at least in an office. You can certainly share it on a network easily enough. But unless no one in your office prints very much, you'll have to refill it with paper more often than most people would want to.

Also worth mention is that the WF-2540 allows printing through the cloud and printing with Apple AirPrint. Note, however, that AirPrint requires a Wi-Fi access point on your network, which you may not have if you've chosen to use the Ethernet or USB connection. In addition, both AirPrint and cloud printing require setting up the printer with a wired or wireless network connection.

Setup, Speed, and Output Quality
Setting up the WF-2540 on a wired network was absolutely typical, both for the physical setup and for installing the drivers and other software on the Windows Vista system I tested with.

Epson WorkForce WF-2540

As with the WF-2530, the WF-2540's speed and output quality are both acceptable but unimpressive. On our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), the WF-2540 tied the WF-2530 at an effective 2.6 pages per minute (ppm). That makes it significantly slower than either the less expensive Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430w below, at 4.3 ppm, or the more expensive Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J825DW above, at 4.0 ppm.

For photos, all of these printers were slower than most inkjets, with the WF-2540 essentially tying the WF-2530 for last place, at 2 minutes 16 seconds.

Output quality is another area where the WF-2540 is a close match to the Epson WF-2530. Text quality falls at the low end of a fairly tight range that includes the vast majority of inkjets. It's more than acceptable for most business use like correspondence and reports, but not suitable if you need top quality text, or just have a demanding eye.

Graphics are more than good enough for internal business use, but you may not consider them good enough for PowerPoint handouts or the like depending on how much of a perfectionist you are. Photo quality is easily good enough for business materials with photos, and even for home use with most photos. However, colors in one photo were a little off in my tests, putting the printer in the same league as the low end of what you can expect from drugstore prints.

Thanks largely to its Ethernet connector and ability to scan to a USB key, the Epson WF-2540 is a more attractive choice for the price than the Epson WF-2530. If you don't need those features, you can save some money by getting the Epson WF-2530, or, better yet, the Brother MFC-J430w, with its faster speed. Similarly, if you need those features but speed is a key consideration too, you'll be better off with the Brother MFC-J825DW, which will also give you duplex printing. If you don't need duplexing, however, and don't need the extra speed, the Epson WF-2540 is a more than reasonable choice that can certainly do the job.

Google Maps tops iOS Apps of the Week

It was ?tempting to turn this week?s best iOS apps list into a 500-word salute to Google Maps. We?re leading off with an app that will be a lifesaver to anyone sick of using the default iOS Maps app. Our other selections this week include an app for crafting, an update to the default Twitter app, an app to get your little ones some more musical culture and an app to order food ahead of time!

Finally, the king is back. Google Maps returns as an app to iOS not a second too soon. It may lack the visual charm of Apple?s Maps app but it actually works, and there?s something to be said for function over fashion. Google Maps has all the same features of the former version that was built into iOS with a few added wrinkles. Now users can use a voice navigation system within the app to get to their destination. And city dwellers with access to public transportation can breathe a sigh of relief as Google Maps app still packs transit directions into its app.

Would-be crafters should enjoy Craftsy, an app that provides online video-based tutorials on a variety of crafting subjects. Everything from knitting to cake decorating to photography and gardening, if it?s crafty, it?s probably part of Craftsy?s educational program. Users can take notes on the videos as they watch them and join a community to ask questions to the app?s interactive classroom with thousands of other students. And Craftsy classes never expire, so they can be reviewed each time a new project calls.

Acknowledging its split from Instagram, the on-board iOS Twitter app has updated with new photo sharing and editing features powered by Aviary. Twitter promises that users can apply one of eight new filters to their photos and that photos can be edited for light, color, size and scale. While serious Instagrammers may bristle at the notion they?ll have to use a different embedded photo service to edit their photos if they?re using the default Twitter app, there?s enough similarity between the two services to make the switch as painless as possible.

The Little Mozart App suggests a full multimedia immersion in order to get young Johnny or Suzie into some of classical music?s greatest hits. The app combines the music of Mozart with narrated text that describes the song and animated illustrations that are suited to each piece of music. Little Mozart App comes with 17 different songs including The Marriage of Figaro and Symphony No. 40. Users can bookmark favorite tracks to return to them quickly and a progress marker shows which songs have been listened to and which have not.

Similar to GrubHub, Order Ahead allows its users to place orders at their favorite restaurants (in the Bay Area only, currently) so they can walk in a short while later and pick up their food without waiting. While the app doesn?t support online delivery at this time, anyone who is out and about who doesn?t want to waste time waiting for their food may find it useful. The app also saves past orders so they can be quickly re-ordered at a later date.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Tony Romo has the surging Dallas Cowboys tied for first place in the NFC East.

Brandon Carr intercepted a pass from Ben Roethlisberger and returned it 36 yards to the 1 in overtime. And Dan Bailey's 21-yard field goal gave the Cowboys a 27-24 win over Pittsburgh in front of thousands of Terrible Towel-waving Steelers fans at Cowboys Stadium on Sunday.

The Cowboys won on a Bailey field goal on the final play for the second straight week since practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown was killed in a one-car accident that led to manslaughter charges against teammate Josh Brent for allegedly driving drunk.

The winning kick came after Tony Romo, who broke the 25,000 yards passing milestone earlier in the game, took a knee to put Bailey in better position.

Bailey beat Cincinnati 20-19 last week with a 40-yarder as time expired, just a day after the accident that killed Brown.

The Cowboys (8-6) moved into a three-way tie for the NFC East lead with the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. The Cowboys have won three straight and five of six.

The Steelers (7-7) lost for the fourth time in five games and trail AFC North rival Cincinnati by a game for the second wild card spot. They host the Bengals next week.

The score was tied at 24 in the final two minutes of regulation, Pittsburgh quickly moved to its 46 after a completion by Roethlisberger and a roughing-the-passer penalty against DeMarcus Ware.

But Sean Lissemore and Anthony Spencer sacked Roethlisberger on consecutive plays to give the Cowboys the ball back.

Dallas, playing with Brown's No. 53 jersey draped on their bench and his number on a helmet decal, couldn't do anything in the final minute.

The drive stalled at the Steelers 43, and Bailey lined up for a 61-yard field goal attempt with 32 seconds left. But the Cowboys called timeout and punted instead. Roethlisberger took a knee, sending the game to overtime.

Roethlisberger was sacked four times and finished 24 of 40 for 339 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Pittsburgh was driving for a go-ahead score when Ware and Spencer sacked Roethlisberger at the Dallas 40, forcing a punt with 3 minutes left. The Cowboys opted to punt at the two-minute warning after a third-down pass to Dwayne Harris was less than a yard short of the first down.

Roethlisberger put the Steelers ahead 24-17 with a 7-yard scoring pass to Antonio Brown, and Brown was about to put Pittsburgh in control with a long punt return.

But Brown fumbled when Victor Butler reached out and knocked the ball loose at the end of a 22-yard return. DeMarco Murray then went in on a 3-yard run.

Tied at 17, the Cowboys were facing third-and-1 from midfield when Romo was stuffed for a 5-yard loss by James Harrison on a bootleg.

Isaac Redman went 22 yards on the first play after the punt, and Roethlisberger completed passes of 20 yards to Mike Wallace and 21 to Jerricho Cotchery before the scoring toss to Brown.

The teams traded quick touchdowns in the third quarter after going to halftime tied at 10.

Dez Bryant extended his touchdown streak to six games while playing with a broken left index finger. Roethlisberger answered that 24-yard score with a 60-yard pass to Wallace to the Dallas 2. Jonathan Dwyer scored from a 1 after a penalty.

Romo was 7 of 7 on the drive to Bryant's touchdown and overcame a 13-yard sack by Lawrence Timmons. The throw to Bryant put Romo over 25,000 yards passing for his career. Romo finished 30 of 42 for 341 yards and two scores.

The first Dallas touchdown was the first scoring connection from Romo to Jason Witten this season.

After two long completions to backup tight end John Hanna, Romo found Witten along the seam and hit him in stride at the goal line on a 17-yard score for a 10-0 Dallas lead in the second quarter. Witten's only other TD came from Kyle Orton at the end of a blowout loss to Chicago.

Roethlisberger pulled the Steelers even at 10. He stepped away from pressure and used a couple of pump fakes to keep pass rushers away before finding Heath Miller wide open along the sideline on a 30-yard score.

After stopping to make the catch, Miller ran in untouched to chants of "Heath" from the black-and-gold clad fans.

Miller finished with eight catches for 76 yards, and Miles Austin led Dallas with seven catches for 79 yards.

If you cut down a tree in the forest, can wildlife hear it?

Dec. 14, 2012 ? A new tool developed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and its partners is being used by scientists and land managers to model how noise travels through landscapes and affects species and ecosystems -- a major factor in land and wildlife management decisions such as where to locate new roads or recreational trails.

The tool, SPreAD-GIS, uses spatial data layers to predict how sound spreads from a source through the surrounding landscape and how it is affected by such factors as vegetation, terrain, weather conditions, and background sound levels. By determining how sound propagates, potential impacts to wildlife can be forecasted. Such impacts can include reducing habitat quality, altering the geographic distribution of species, disrupting animal communication, and causing stress.

In an example discussed in the paper, the sensitivities of humans and owls to motor vehicle sound levels were compared. The results of the SPreAD-GIS analysis showed that in the same location, motor vehicle noise would affect owls in an area 45 percent larger than the area affected for humans. Exposure to noise may affect an owl's livelihood as the animal relies on its acute sense of hearing to detect even the slightest movement of its prey.

WCS Scientist Sarah Reed said, "Exposure to human-caused noise can change the game for many species. Those species that are less tolerant of noise can be put at a disadvantage and ultimately, this may result in a loss in biodiversity. By predicting what the effects of sound will be on a bird or mammal species in advance, we can more adequately balance our land-use planning decisions with conservation considerations."

Reed and colleagues are currently using SPreAD-GIS and field measurements of motor vehicle noise to forecast the area affected for bird and mammal communities in the Sierra National Forest in California. In addition, the model has been downloaded by hundreds of users in more than 25 countries and used for diverse education, research, and management applications. This includes modeling potential noise propagation from roads, recreational activity, heavy equipment, residential development, and natural resource extraction.

Reed added, "Most existing tools are used to understand noise in human-dominated environments and don't incorporate factors affecting noise propagation in natural systems. This tool is free and relatively user-friendly for the average desktop GIS user, and comes at a time when ecologists are just beginning to understand the critical role that sound disturbances play in affecting wildlife."

Reed started the SPreAD-GIS project as a scientist with The Wilderness Society (TWS) and completed it as a Smith Conservation Research Fellow and WCS employee. The model is available for download from TWS's Landscape Collaborative (www.landscapecollaborative.org) website.

The tool is described in the November print edition of the journal Environmental Modeling & Software. Authors include Sarah E. Reed of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Colorado State University, Jennifer L. Boggs, formerly of The Wilderness Society, and Jacob P. Mann.

Smartphones can soon be used to 'e-hail' NYC taxis

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City's Taxi and Limousine Commission has approved a plan that will let riders use their smartphones to "e-hail" yellow cabs.

Under the plan approved Thursday, downloaded apps will link customers with drivers starting Feb. 15.

Commissioner David Yassky says the city will lay down some ground rules to accommodate people raising their arm to stop a cab the old-fashioned way.

But the commissioner says that as long as the technology exists, it should be available to customers and drivers.

Until now, the city has banned yellow taxis from prearranging rides.
