Website lets you say it with galaxies

The My Galaxies website can be used to render any message using actual pictures of galaxies.

Want to see your name up in lights? How about harnessing galaxies to send a message? There's a website for that, thanks to University of Nottingham astronomer Steven Bamford and Galaxy Zoo's legions of virtual sky-searchers. "My Galaxies" lets you spell out anything you want, using real galaxies that are shaped like characters.

It's clear that Bamford's a character as well, judging by his blurb explaining what the project is all about. Galaxy Zoo participants have classified nearly a million galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, based on their shapes, and it turns out that some of those shapes happen to look like letters of the alphabet.

"Really?" Bamford asks rhetorically. "There are galaxies that look like letters? OK, S and Z I can believe, but M? H? R? Capitals or little letters? What about punctuation, or numbers? ... Well, there aren't many, but when you've got pictures of millions of galaxies and an energetic group of Zooites, there isn't much that can stay hidden!"

Zooites began using the odd-shaped galaxies for their own custom-made messages, and eventually Bamford and a colleague of his wrote a Web-based computer program to translate typed messages into Galaxese. T-R-Y ?I-T ?O-U-T!

2 killed, 3 wounded in shooting at Seattle cafe

SEATTLE (AP) ? A gunman opened fire at a Seattle cafe on Wednesday, killing two people, critically wounding three others and setting off a manhunt that forced officials to close nearby schools.

Police searching for the suspect also had to respond to another fatal shooting near the city's downtown. They say a man killed a woman in an apparent carjacking and fled in a black SUV.

Authorities didn't immediately know whether the shootings were related.

The latest spasm of deadly gun violence to hit the city in recent weeks has worried Seattle's leaders and prompted police to consider increasing patrols in high-crime areas.

Gunfire erupted late Wednesday morning at Cafe Racer, a restaurant and music venue north of the University of Washington. The gunman was described as a man in his 30s wearing dark clothes.

Evan Hill, who lives above the building where the cafe shooting happened, said the cafe was an artists' collective and performance space.

"It's the strangest place to think of a shooting," said Hill, who heard four to five shots. He said he ran to his balcony and called 911, but didn't see a suspect.

Nearby Roosevelt High School has been locked down during the manhunt. Seattle School District spokeswoman Teresa Wippel said students also are locked inside Eckstein Middle School and Greenlake Elementary.

Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg said all three wounded from the University District shooting are in critical condition.

In the second shooting, the SUV that the gunman fled in was later found, but the suspect remained at large, police said.

In the last month, there have been two random killings in the city.

Last week, a man died when a stray bullet struck him as he and his family drove down a Seattle street. In late April, a woman died of injuries suffered in an apparently random drive-by shooting near downtown.

No arrests have been made in either of those fatalities.

On Saturday, a bystander was wounded near the iconic Space Needle when he was struck by a bullet allegedly fired by a gang member involved in a dispute with another man, authorities said.

In addition to the plan to increase the number of officers on patrol in high-crime areas, police are also urging people with information about shootings to come forward.

Some city leaders were skeptical those approaches would work.

"We have seen many community vigils, community mobilizations. We've heard about these strategies before," said Councilman Tom Rasmussen. "What's going to change?"

Pakistan court shuts plants, angers US investor

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? David Walters saw a business opportunity where few other foreign investors would dare to tread: Pakistan's power sector. He forecast profit by importing power stations, linking them to the national grid and selling the electricity to the energy-starved country.

But the former governor of Oklahoma didn't reckon on three things that would sour his multimillion dollar investments: the inability of the government to provide the fuel, a chronically unstable grid and, in the end, the country's activist Supreme Court.

Acting on a petition by lawmakers who alleged the businesses were little more than a scam, the court declared his company's plants and all other similar projects established in the country since 2006 illegal. Judges ordered criminal investigations into those involved, saying corruption marred the bidding process and the country didn't need any more power plants ? just better management of existing ones.

Supporters say the decision was a much needed move by the only institution in Pakistan willing or able to strike a blow against rampant government graft and incompetence. Others called it a political decision by an overreaching court that has killed off any hope of foreign investment.

"Every company that will consider making an investment in Pakistan will now have a lump in their throat," said Walters, who counts his own losses in the millions and is vowing to seek international arbitration.

The chaos has highlighted the chronic mismanagement of Pakistan's power sector, which is unable to produce enough electricity to meet demand. The country suffers rolling power cuts for up to 18 hours a day. The government charges consumers less for the power than it costs to produce, but it doesn't have enough money to subsidize the producers, trapping the sector in a debt cycle.

The outages have crippled the country's industrial base, particularly textile factories, and serve as a daily reminder of the state's inability to take care of its citizens. As air conditioners are switched on this summer, record power cuts are being forecast ? along with added social unrest in a country already creaking under assault from Islamist militants.

The government, which devotes most of its attention to political survival, has done nothing to address the causes of the energy crisis since it took power four years ago.

Back in 2006, the government of Pervez Musharraf pitched what it thought was a short-term solution to the problem ? granting small power plants contracts of between three and five years, while it worked on longer-term projects like hydroelectric power.

Walters saw an opportunity and teamed up with one of the country's wealthiest businessman, Iqbal Ahmed, to exploit the demand for power. Ahmed's family company is Pakistan's biggest producer of natural gas and was close to Musharraf.

President Asif Ali Zardari continued with the so called "rental power projects" when he took office. By April, Walters Power International or its local partner had contracts to run three stations and was aiming to build one of Pakistan's largest power generation portfolios.

Under the deals, the companies received multimillion dollar payments in advance. But in many cases the government failed to provide gas to run them. With the plants not producing and the frequency of power outages increasing nationwide, the deals that led to them came under scrutiny from the media, the opposition and anti-corruption agencies.

"The government knew there was no gas. Walters knew there was no gas," said Khwaja Mohammad Asif, one of two lawmakers who petitioned the Supreme Court asking it to investigate the projects. "There is overwhelming evidence that these were scams from the word go."

Walters denied any wrongdoing and said the contracts were vetted by seven government agencies before it was signed. He said he never had any reason to doubt the government would provide gas, and said the advance and guaranteed payments were standard in such power arrangements around the world.

One of his prize plants was in Naudero in Sindh province. The $70 million plant was inaugurated by Zardari, who touted it as part of the solution to the energy crisis. It was supposed to provide power to local towns and villages and for wells vital to agriculture in the area, but it ran only to a fraction of its capacity. Hours after the Supreme Court ruling, it was shut down. Walters now says he can't get permission to recover the machinery from the site.

He said the opposition and the court were trying to score political points.

"Calling it a scam is nothing but an effort to embarrass the government by two members of parliament who managed to get the Supreme Court on their side," said Walters.

It's a similar story with the other foreign investor to take up the offer. Turkish company Karkey Karadeniz Elektrik Uretim invested $350 million in hulking floating power barges that were moored off the port city of Karachi. They started operations in April last year, but they were supplied little or no gas. The Supreme Court ruling ordered the company to repay a $180 million advance it was paid by the government. In a statement, Karky said it had started arbitration proceedings against the government and that the court ruling contained several material and factual errors.

The Supreme Court investigated the projects under so-called "suo moto" provisions, which allows it to initiate cases based on the "public interest," instead of waiting for cases appealed from lower courts to land in its docket.

It has passed similar orders on the price of sugar and established commissions to recover written-off loans, areas of economics and policy that some say should rarely be its business.

Saleem Mandviwalla, the head of Pakistan's Investment Board, said he was bewildered by the latest court order.

"This will not only effect the power business, but every business," he said. "All it has done has created more problems for Pakistan."

A recent report by the International Commission of Jurists said that the court was using "suo moto" investigations excessively, and that "when they are inappropriately applied, they may upset the balance of power and interfere with the ordinary course of justice."

But in a country where even government supporters admit that it has done nothing to curb corruption or make policy, some say that the Supreme Court is their only hope.

"All in all, they shouldn't be looking at this stuff, but if you were going to kill any policy, this would probably be it," said Feisal Naqvi, a lawyer and blogger. "The rental power policy was asinine."

Google+ for Android catches up with iPhone

Well, perhaps I should qualify that with "almost", depending on what matters more to you as a user. On Thursday, 15 days after releasing a major Google+ update for iPhone, the Android version arrived. Timing is interesting. According to NPD, considerably more Android users access Google+ from the browser than the app -- 16 percent to 10 percent overall reach, in March, respectively. My question for you quick downloaders, will that be true for you, or is the app now preferred? It's no idle question, because the web experience is now so vastly different from the app.

Like its counterpart, Google+ for Android offers bleeding-edge photos. Pretty much everything about Google+ bleeds the edge of the screen. The effect is immersive. You just want to scroll and scroll -- and you will since so much less content fills the screen now. But the Android version has better visual flow than its iOS counterpart. Stated differently: It's snappier, more alive. "We're building for a mobile future", Google senior veep Vic Gundotra says. That's apparent from just how different the app is from the web experience -- and how immersive.

Immersion is Everything

Immersion is critical in an app of this kind:

1. Engagement. Social networking is all about relationships, meaningfully making connections with others. Google+ distinguishes from Facebook in several key areas, with common interest being one of the most important. The Circle concept allows people to engage with others they might not know based on something important they share, while Facebook is more about extending relationships with people whom they know -- even if just casually. The app's immersive quality pulls you into Google+ and there engaging others. New capabilities, such as inline editing and integrated Hangouts, improve and extend engagement.

2. Discovery. Because Google+ is so much about interests shared in common, discovering them is crucial. Also, there's a Twitter-like quality to the Google+ newsfeed that makes finding things all the more important, and difficult. The immersive, bleed-to-edge UI and tabs like "What's Hot" improve discovery of people, interests, happenings and news -- as well as the "Nearby" tab and easy "check-in" option.

3. Time spent online. Immersive web services/apps hold peoples' attention. This time is crucial for a cloud provider like Google that deals with lots of transitory traffic, mainly from search. Catching and keeping people is:

Good for the brand
Connecting users to ancillary products or services
Providing the eyeballs for selling and capitalizing ads or other promotional gimmicks

For time spent on mobile, there is dramatic change underway. In March, according to comScore, the average American Facebook user spent more time on the site from smartphone than personal computer -- 441.3 minutes to 339 minutes, respectively. What neither Facebook or Google has done well: Wrap meaningful ads around the content, and that's an area the search giant has much to prove because 1) It's core to revenue; and 2) The bleed-to-edge design doesn't make room for ads the way one with lots more white space would.

What's Google+ 2.6 Like?

I downloaded Google+ for Android v2.6 late morning EDT on Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ and Asus Transformer Pad 300, running Android 4.04 and 4.03, respectively. I can't attest for how the user experience might differ on devices running older operating systems.

My reaction is mixed compared to the iOS version, which in some ways I find superior. Responding to Gundotra, Eric Leslie writes: "I was excited when I saw the iPhone version, but this looks like a rough port. There isn't much polish. If you're looking at a post and start scrolling down, there is a weird gradient that moves over the top that looks odd until you reach the white where the comments are. I don't see any sexy animations like the iPhone has. Come on guys!?"

Beyond the visuals and improved discovery, two features stand out: Inline editing and integrated Hangouts. The latter, for video chatting, was one of Ice Cream Sandwich's stand-out features when launched last year. But as the cloud computing giant improved the feature as part of Google+, Hangouts grew clumsy, since users had to initiate them outside the social network. No longer.

"To get started, tap 'Hangout' in the (new) navigation ribbon, add some friends and tap 'Start'", Gundotra explains. "We'll ring their phones (if you want), and if someone misses the hangout, they can ring you back with a single tap".

Inline editing is a "Doh?" feature that Google should have included from day one. Who wants to post while mobile if making a typing mistake he or she can't fix later on?

Search is improved, and I find it to be better than in the browser. Google+ for Android presents options for "Posts" and "People". However, my initial reaction, which might change with further use, is that Google+ for iPhone discovery is better.

In the bullet points in the section above, I noted the value of connecting additional services. Some Google+ users aren't satisfied with how far the service has come. In response to Gundotra, Phil Lott calls the new app a "huge improvement", but then requests: "Please unify Google Talk, Google+ Hangouts and Google Messenger. These services don't interoperate the way the should, although they have very much in common. I' don't understand why I can't text someone on Google Talk via Google+ Messenger etc."

The tablet experience is superior in some ways, lacking in others compared to new iPad. Clearly neither Google+ app is optimized for tablets. On new iPad, the user taps 2X, which expands the size to fill the screen with iPhone border around the app. On the Android tablet, Google+ fills the screen, offering the more visually-appealing edge-to-edge experience. However, text and photos are much sharper on new iPad, which is in part because of the higher resolution display.

iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak ?Absinthe 2.0?: How to Unlock iPhone 4S, iPad 3, iPod Touch and More [VIDEO]

The eagerly anticipated untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 - Absinthe 2.0 - was released on Friday at the high-profile Hack In The Box (HITB) security conference in Amsterdam. The latest untethered jailbreak supports the whole range of iOS devices, except for the third generation Apple TV.

The main errors affecting users seem to be: "Error detecting device (lockdown error -5)" and "Could not connect to lockdown".

As iDownloadblog notes, @pod2g and @pimskeks later confirmed the problem was a random coincidence that created a timeout. Nevertheless, the fix seems fairly easy. All you have to do is go to "Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content and Settings" and then make sure you download Absinthe 2.0.1 and run it again.

That's why I'm keen to use wallpapers by Kittehface Software. They've brought us great wallpapers like the Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper, Galactic Core Live Wallpaper, and even an excellent Canabalt HD port.

Today I bring you another in a line of great live wallpapers, the Jumpgate Live Wallpaper. What could be better than watching our favorite android, ~~Andy~~ Bugdroid, careen through space with a jetpack strapped to his back? It's hilarious!

Still, as hilarious as it might be, it's also really well done. There's nary a screen stutter when I swipe from left to right, and if you purchase the full version of the wallpaper, you unlock the full settings menu, which really lets you customize your experience.

From the settings menu, you can mess around with everything from the camera speed to the flight speed, to even the amount of asteroids barreling down on our fair, green friend. You can also customize the "energy style" (which is the swirly lane of color Bugdroid is flying through) between three choices: monochrome, Google colors, and pixilated. Monochrome and pixilated are dangerously close to being similar, but if you check them back-to-back, you'll quickly notice how much smoother the non-pixilated option is.

If you eschew the Google colors option, you can also change the color of the energy lane using the energy color? option. (Go figure!) It uses three sliders, which is certainly appreciated (and a welcome improvement over that circular color picker Android had going on for a while).

Rounding out the settings menu are options for star brightness and turning the helix on and off. Other than that, you're done. Well, except for the character option. Did I mention you can get rid of Bugdroid and have a spaceship flying on screen instead? Cause you totally can.

Honestly, Jumpgate Live Wallpaper is probably one of the coolest live wallpapers I've seen in a while. Obviously you've got to be an Android diehard to even consider using it, but if you're reading this article, you probably are.

Brittle Diabetes | health article

It is very complicated for a doctor to treat, and most people that have brittle diabetes see an endocrinologist. This is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of complex diabetes problems along with other endocrine disorders.

Brittle diabetes, as we now know it, can be difficult not only for the patients but to the family and health care team. While this condition most frequently occurs in the age group of 15-30 years old, there have been reports of this condition afflicting the elderly.

Before proceeding to the brittle diabetes update, let us remind ourselves of what this term means. It is a term used when the blood glucose level swings from low to high and vice versa. It is also called unstable or labile diabetes. Although some have to accept a life with this roller coaster ride, there is good news.

That said, it is not the end of the world; it is just a challenge one has to meet. The key to achieving a blood glucose level to as normal target as possible without severe hypoglycemia is lifestyle. It is all about consistency in lifestyle, in carbohydrate intake, and insulin injections and exercise. If all the aforementioned are constant, chances are the blood sugar level will be stable.

This method is supposed to keep blood sugars within the target range. A majority of participants of this study were able to attain A1c reading of less than 7.5% by using insulin therapy for the brittle type 1 diabetes. Study participants with this result were able to prevent the life-threatening complications without increasing the chances of hypoglycemic events.

Recognized onset between 25 and 64 years (Adult Diabetics). Growth onset, insulin-dependent diabetes may occur up to the age 22 or 23 years, but between 20 and 35 years, such cases merge into the adult-onset cases that are much less insulin-dependent. These patients begin with variable symptoms of diabetes and may or may not need insulin.

Don?t forget you?re working with a food, not a medicine. If they?re going to have a treat, they can drink an extra dose of Original Limu to help balance it. They need to keep track of their Blood Sugar levels anyway so increasing the Limu until it works for them is not a big deal. Original Limu can be very flexible!

It is a life-long disorder that can happen in children or adults. It is a totally different disease than Type 2. Type 1 diabetes occurs normally in children, adolescents or young adults, and most often at puberty. This type of diabetes is also called insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes.

Glucose from digested food circulates in the blood throughout the body as a ready source of energy for cells. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin effectively allows glucose the enter into cells. Some of the glucose in the body is stored as a source of energy in the form of glycogen. With insulin resistance, the glucose remains in the blood and does not enter cells.

? Train and follow up on programs with sales reps, sales managers, and internal
departments to facilitate the execution of marketing and sales programs.
? Track various marketing programs from conception through completion.
? Track and maintain spending and project budgets.
Manage MVP Program enhancements or maintain program functions. Each SAM has at least one
area of MVP that they own (manage, develop, and execute while being accountable for its
results. Examples include Roundtable & Forum, MVP Communications, Strategic partners,
Training plans, Email discussion group tool)
? Develop new enhancements or implement new approaches to improve our results or
increase efficiencies
? Maintain those areas of responsibilities to hit anticipated results, including budgets
? Communicate and promote any program changes.
Analysis
? Provide assistance with all report tracking required by the Marketing Analytics team in
order to issue accurate reports.
? Using MVP performance metrics and relationship assessment to be able to recommend
MVP program termination/probation status.
? Assist in the interpretation of a broker?s business performance and build marketing and
business recommendations.
? Build project plans that incorporate investment and spending analysis for marketing
programs
? Assist in the team?s annual planning exercises to improve MVP program results.
? Track sales offices? overall MVP performance and build recruitment and sales plans,
accordingly.
Selling and Promoting MVP
? Participate in broker presentations. This may include one on one meetings as well as
training sessions and seminars for MVP Academy, groups of brokers or large multiple
producer firms.
? Assist & participate in the brokers? introduction to MVP and in the selection process,
working with managers and reps to canvass their territory for potential MVPs, and
screening nominated brokers.
? Hold annual planning meetings (or call) and at least one mid-year update meeting (or
call) with all non-probation MVP.
? Provide MVP related marketing support to his or her respective sales offices.
? Negotiate sales goals and address performance results.
? Bachelor?s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field or equivalent
work experience.
? 3 years of marketing experience or related business experience such as business
consulting to small businesses.
? Requires thorough knowledge of marketing concepts and business to business marketing
methods.
? Requires specific experience in development and implementation of marketing programs,
including direct marketing, branding, lead generation, web site design, sales literature,

ISS Captures SpaceX Dragon Capsule

Today at 9:56AM EDT (13:56 GMT) the robotic arm on the International Space Station successfully captured SpaceX's Dragon capsule. It's the first time a commercial craft has connected with the ISS, and the first time a spacecraft made in the U.S. has gone to the station since the retirement of the shuttle. The approach was delayed temporarily as engineers worked out bad sensor readings due to light reflected off the ISS's Kibo laboratory. "To work around the problem, SpaceX narrowed the field of view for the laser sensor so that it wouldn't pick up light from the offending reflector. Dragon then returned to the 30-meter checkpoint and moved in for the final approach." If all goes well today, the capsule will most likely be opened tomorrow. Video of the operation is being broadcast live on NASA TV.

4 Steps in Meditation for Health and Healing

Learning meditation for health and healing is fairly popular nowadays. With more and more people not only coping with physical stress but also emotional and spiritual ones; it isn?t surprising that individuals are looking for inner peace amidst the chaos. This is exactly what meditation does, giving individuals the opportunity to reorder their minds and come back with a fresher view of their surroundings.

For those who want to try out meditation for health and healing, following are some of the steps for this process.

Meditation for Health and Healing Step 1 - Find A Quiet Place

The first thing to do is find a quiet place. This can be anywhere from the person?s room or perhaps beside a river or the sea. The point is that the location should be free from any distractions ? not even the radio.

Meditation is best done in the presence of silence or perhaps when listening to soothing sounds.

Meditation for Health and Healing Step 2 - Get into Position
Now this is something that a lot of people argue about when it comes to meditation. Most believe that the process requires that a person to be sitting cross legged on the floor with their hands clasped together. This isn?t always the case. The whole point of meditation is so that the body could relax and the mind could drift off. Hence, whatever position a person feels comfortable in is fine. The most basic sitting position is usually recommended for beginners however because it is easier to relax with this.

Meditation for Health and Healing Step 3 - Focus on your Breathing
Now this is the hardest part of meditation for health and healing. At this point, a person would need to focus on just one thing only ? the sound of their breath. They need to concentrate mainly on the inhalation and exhalation of oxygen as they allow their mind to blank. The main goal here is to just stop the mind from ?drifting? and find just one thing to settle in. A good technique beginners can use is to focus on counting from 1 to 10 and repeating it over and over again. This might take some time to master so be patient.

Meditation for health and healing Step 4 ? How Does it Help?
With meditation health and healing, a person is able to clear his or her mind and concentrate on something else. During this process, the mind is blanked, leaving behind all the stress and worries of the individual. This discipline allows a person to transcend from relaxing to a deeper level of peace. When a person has gotten used to meditation, they usually find themselves approaching life at a different level and are becoming more aware of their surroundings and their personality.

Note that meditation for health and healing is not something that can be mastered overnight. This is why individuals should set aside specific times in a day to devote through the practice. This way, they will find themselves slowly getting into the spirit of meditation. Ordinarily, individuals can maintain meditation for several minutes to one hour. However, note that this is not a contest and meditation for health and healing does not require long hours of the discipline each day.
