Turkey hosts conference on Afghan stability (AP)

ISTANBUL ? Regional leaders and diplomats are discussing ways of improving security and economic development in Afghanistan as international combat forces prepare to leave by the end of 2014.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Pakistani counterpart, Asif Ali Zardari, are attending the conference in Istanbul Wednesday.

Afghanistan and the United States want Pakistan to do more to curb militant activity and sanctuaries on its territory. Pakistan denies it shelters or supports militants.

China, India and Iran are among countries with envoys at the one-day conference. The United States and other Western countries with troops in Afghanistan have sent representatives to show support.
