'Sex and the City' Actress Cynthia Nixon: "Homosexuality is a Choice ...

Nixon's comments have caused quite a stir.

?If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination? Leviticus 20:13
Sex and the City Actress Cynthia Nixon has sent shockwaves through the gay community with her adamant comments that homosexuality is a choice. In an interview with the New York Times Magazine, Nixon, who is in a lesbian relationship, made it quite clear that being gay is a choice and that the homosexual community should give up the argument that ?being gay is genetic? altogether.

When questioned about the stir her relationship with Christine Marioni has caused in the media and those in the gay community who doubted her ?sincerity? in being gay, Nixon told the New York Times Magazine:

?I totally reject that,? she said heatedly. ?I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line ?I?ve been straight and I?ve been gay, and gay is better.? And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it?s not, but for me it?s a choice, and you don?t get to define my gayness for me. A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it?s a choice, then we could opt out. I say it doesn?t matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not.? Her face was red and her arms were waving. ?As you can tell,? she said, ?I am very annoyed about this issue. Why can?t it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we?re just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don?t think that they should define the terms of the debate. I also feel like people think I was walking around in a cloud and didn?t realize I was gay, which I find really offensive. I find it offensive to me, but I also find it offensive to all the men I?ve been out with.? (Source)

Nixon?s comments have angered gay activists. Among the activists most horrified by Nixon?s comments was Truth Wins Out founder Wayne Besen, whose organization monitors and tries to debunk programs that claim to cure people of same-sex attractions with therapy. Besen said he found the actress? analysis irresponsible and flippant, despite her ample caveats.

?Cynthia did not put adequate thought into the ramifications of her words, and it is going to be used when some kid comes out and their parents force them into some ex-gay camp while she?s off drinking cocktails at fancy parties,? Besen said. ?When people say it?s a choice, they are green-lighting an enormous amount of abuse because if it?s a choice, people will try to influence and guide young people to what they perceive as the right choice.? Homosexual activists and advocates have long said that being gay is genetic despite the lack of scientific evidence. Science has confirmed that there this no ?gay gene.? Clinton Anderson, the director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns Office of the American Psychological Association stated: ?There is substantial evidence of various connections between genes, brain, hormones and sexual identity,? he said. ?But those do not amount to a simple picture that A leads to B.?

Even, Peter Tatchell, an Australian-born British homosexual activist who founded the ?direct action? group OutRage! that specializes in media stunts such as disrupting Christian religious services, wrote on Spiked Online that he agrees with the scientific consensus that there is no such thing as a ?gay gene.? ?Genes and hormones may predispose a person to one sexuality rather than another. But that?s all. Predisposition and determination are two different things.? and that sexuality ?is ?far more ambiguous, blurred and overlapping than any theory of genetic causality can allow.? Of course these type of unbiased views from the gay community itself do not get much media coverage because it works against the pro-gay agenda in the media and society at present. Hence the intense media backlash against Nixon at present.
As covered in the Beginning and End article about Christian singer Jennifer Knapp, who announced in 2010 that she was in a lesbian relationship (see ?Christian Singer Jennifer Knapp Comes out of the Closet? Is it Okay to be Christian and Gay??), the Bible explains the source of homosexuality and it is not genetic:

Romans 1: 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

It is a part of our sinful flesh and our desires that violate God?s law that sexual immorality has entered our society. The Bible states that the ?natural? relationship for a woman is to be with a man and vice versa. But sinful rebellion in the hearts of people will lead to a point where God will remove righteous influence and allow people to ?do what they feel like? and specifically states that homosexuality is a ?vile affection? that people pursue in sinful lust. This passage is clearly stating that anything else is ?error.? Thus by Biblical standard being gay is a sin and not genetic.
As detailed in the article on Jennifer Knapp, none of this prevents someone who is gay from becoming a born again Christian. All of people have sinned and fallen short of God?s standards for goodness in their life (this author definitely included) and being gay does not earn any special significant status. The challenge is whether or not a person is willing to recognize homosexuality as a sin. The book of 1 John states: ?If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.? God?s morality is not subject to human opinions, feelings and debates. So despite the best intentions by those in society to say homosexuality is natural and should be celebrated, it is still a sin. But acknowledging this to God will lead to His mercy and love: ?If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.? (1 John 1:8). Christians should not be getting into continual debates in this issue without first presenting the clear and loving Gospel of Jesus Christ.

?

The Christian life is not about ?following your heart? and ?doing what you feel is right.? It is about a willingness to forego and forsake what you think is right, your ego, prideful thoughts and lusts to follow Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior. Jesus said: ?Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel?s, the same shall save it.? (Mark 8). The challenge is not about nature versus nurture. It is about a willingness to surrender what one thinks is right for what Jesus says is right through the Bible. This is what the Bible calls being a ?living sacrifice.? And the reward is eternal life in Heaven.
